AWWU meets the requirements of an updated U.S. Environmental Protection Agency regulation that’s focused on eliminating the risk of lead in drinking water. Our drinking water is high-quality, reliable, and does not contain lead when it leaves the treatment facility. The risk of lead in the drinking water system comes from pipes and plumbing components made of lead. AWWU has no documented lead pipes within our system, and lead water pipe production ended in the 1940s. Lead pipes, solder, and fittings were banned in the United States several decades ago. AWWU regularly tests drinking water at end-user taps to ensure it is safe and does not exceed maximum contaminant limits for lead. However, the pipe that brings water into your home is your private property. In compliance with the Environmental Protection Agency’s Lead and Copper Rule requirements, AWWU is asking for your help to confirm those pipes are not lead.
