AWWU Utility Rates for 2012 Approved by Regulatory Commission of Alaska

The Regulatory Commission of Alaska approved rate increases effective January 1, 2012 for Anchorage Water & Wastewater Utility. A typical single family residential account will notice a $2.62 increase in their monthly water bill and an increase of $3.74 each month in their sewer bill. RCA Approves Utility MUSA Payments
The Regulatory Commission of Alaska summarized their findings in favor of Anchorage Water & Wastewater Utility as follows:

"On remand from the Alaska Supreme Court, we (the Regulatory Commission of Alaska) reverse our earlier denial of the Municipality of Anchorage d/b/a Anchorage Water and Wastewater Utility’s (AWWU) 2004 rate increase requests. Those requests were made, in part, to cover increased Municipal Utility Service Assessment (MUSA) payments to the Municipality of Anchorage (Municipality). MUSA payments increased when the Municipality enacted an ordinance in 2003 changing the base upon which MUSA was calculated by adding contributed plant (property acquired through donation or grant). Before the change, the base consisted only of non-contributed plant (property acquired with utility funds).

We have accepted and continue to accept the policy proposition that municipal utilities should be allowed to include in rates a reasonable contribution to assist in supporting the municipal services they receive. We find the challenged payments for MUSA on contributed plant are reasonably calculated and can be included in the rates.

We therefore allow AWWU to include MUSA on contributed plant as an operating expense in its revenue requirements. We approve as permanent the interim rates collected by AWWU in 2004 and 2005. We close these dockets" ... Read More

Fluoride Levels in Anchorage Drinking Water Lowered
