South Chugiak Water & Sewer Improvements

The Route Assessment and Project Prioritization Report (CRW / October 2003) prioritized the South Chugiak Water and Sewer Improvements higher than the North Chugiak Water Improvements and the Peters Creek Water Improvements. Additionally, the South Chugiak Water and Sewer Improvement were further prioritized into project segments, which are depicted in the figures included on this page and discussed below. The existing funds will allow complete construction of the following project segments:

  1. Gravity Sewer Trunk Extension (Priority 1). This project will extend the existing gravity sewer main on the Old Glenn Highway from Raeleen Street to just north of Monastery Drive.
  2. Sanitary Sewer Force Main Trunk (Priority 2). This project will include a sanitary sewer lift station and force main on South Birchwood Loop Road and the Old Glenn Highway from Chugiak High School and connect to the previously discussed Gravity Sewer Trunk Extension (Priority 1).
  3. Anchorage School District (ASD) On-Property Sewer Improvements (Priority 3). This project will convert the on-site sewer leach-fields that serve Chugiak High School and Birchwood Elementary School to a piped system that will connect to the previously discussed Sanitary Sewer Force Main Trunk (Priority 2) and Gravity Sewer Trunk Extension (Priority 1).
  4. South Water Main Extension (Priority 4). This project will extend the existing water main on the Old Glenn Highway from south end of Lower Fire Lake north to East Lake Ridge Road.
  5. North Water Main Extension (Priority 5). This project will extend the South Water Main Extension on the Old Glenn Highway north to South Birchwood Loop Road, then west on South Birchwood Loop Road to the Existing Water Transmission Vault near Chugiak High School.

AWWU anticipates securing adequate funds to complete construction of the sewer segments (Priority Segments 1, 2, & 3) in 2008/2009 to provide piped sewer service to Chugiak High School and Birchwood Elementary School.

At this time funding for the water segments (Priority Segments 4 & 5) is not currently planned since all proposed Water Improvement Districts failed to be formed by the community..
